However and wherever we are,
We must live as if we will never die!
Nazim Hikmet
Life Philosophy
Nazim Hikmet, is a well-known Turkish poet who spent 12 years in prison because of a poem. His ambition for life reflects on my philosophy of life, which is to surround my life with four themes: Passion, mindfulness, justice and serotonin. My philosophy of life is inspired by passion for daily-life that is mastered with scaffolding mindfulness for self, and devoting self to justice for others, while adding a touch of serotonin-happiness hormone.
Truly being myself also reflects to my professional identity. Experiencing hardships in life with my brother, who has CP, has paved the way for my professional work. Especially, the frustration from inadequate support resources in my hometown for a person with special needs motivated me to choose my area of expertise as the field of special education.
I am a doctoral student in special education department in University of Kansas. Previously, I got my MA in special education in SFSU, San Francisco and got another MA in elementary education in Akdeniz University, Turkey. My research interest includes exploring multicultural education for social justice, respect and tolerance for diversity, infusing Universal Design of Learning (UDL) and other technological frameworks to education for serving better to all levels and kinds of learners, and applying self-determination skills to individuals with special needs' education for transition process. As aforementioned, I truly believe life is full of opportunities to apply those four themes in its various domains, and as a beginner researcher, I am confident about transferring that knowledge gained by those opportunities in to my scholar work to build my research agenda in time.
I have organized my professional work into a portfolio, which underlines my research, teaching and service in education. Please use buttons to reach each element of portfolio.
